multi-channel performance
a theatre experience of parallel narratives and intersensory perception

Claustrophobia is a journey through togetherness and solitude, across the realms of installation, soundscape, text and theatre. The performance is a paradox in dialogue: intimacy and claustrophobia. It is not only devised as content, but also developed as experiential form in the performance. Audience sitting collectively together in the theatre, yet isolated by headphones for the individual listening experience. The composition of soundtracks based on text, recorded sounds and a wider world of musicality offers a visual and pictorial soundscape that expands the imagination to the storytelling. It seems to be one's dreams yet another's memories, or indeed the collective reality of hope and amnesia of the city.

In this production, installation meets performance to create multi-layered narratives. Installation here reclaims its rule as a parallel means of storytelling in theatre, inviting spectators into the symbolic subconscious world of the creator and performers. Installation and soundscapes cooperates in polyphonic-like composition, in juxtaposing, confronting and defining each other in the process. Claustrophobia is a multi-channel performance, resulting in an experience that stimulates and expands the audience's intersensory perception.

Vee Leong

Vee Leong is a writer-director in Hong Kong, dedicated to the research and practice of contemporary form and politics of text-based theatre making. Interplaying the extremes of authenticity and artificiality, her works attempt to speak to the many aesthetic and political challenges nowadays; and the changing speed of perceptions in our highly mediated urban experience.

Thrice nominated for Best Director, Hong Kong Theatre Libre Awards (Fragments of Stones and Gold (2015), Caryl Churchill's Far Away (2010); and Martin Crimp's The City), she won the accolade for the latter in 2014.

Tam Wai-ping

Born in Hong Kong in 1967, completed his postgraduate study at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College of London, United Kingdom in 1995. He is the chairman and one of the founders of Art Map. He serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Fine Arts of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Tam's early work explores the definition of reality, to search the situational difference between "Fact" and "Reality". In face with the hardships of reality, he has been exploring the relationship between "Individual and Land" that attempts an insight into history and modern life, leading to the investigation of modernity in Asian values. The recent interest looks at the relationships between "Text", "Object" and "Image", it re-evaluates how art can serve as a cognitive experience.
